Playoff Results
- Northern had 2 swimmers compete in the state finals. Ben Pritchard and Chris Erickson. Ben swam in the 500 free and Chris swam in the 50 free and 100 back. Chris got a 4th place finish in the state finals.

Indoor Track/Field
At the 3A Mens Indoor Track/Field State Championship, Durham School of the Arts finished fourth in the rankings. This success was highlighted by a 1st place finish for Adrien Jacobs in the 500M Dash with a time of 1:05.20. DSA’s Kaleb Lucas added a 2nd place finish in the Long Jump and third in the 55M Hurdles. The Mens 4X200 Meter Relay team also finished in the top three.
In the 4A Mens Division, Jordan High School senior Jordan Polk took home gold in the 500M and 300M races contributing to his team’s 7th place finish.
DPS athletes excelled in the triple jump at the Women’s Indoor Track/Field State Championships. Junior Rafaela Drake from Riverside won the 4A Womens Triple Jump while in the 3A Girls Triple Jump, Shamari Allen, a senior from the Durham School of the Arts took second place with a distance of 36-06.50.
Swim/Dive
At the 3A Men’s Swim/Dive Championships, the NCHSAA reports that Durham School of the Arts junior Lucca Battaglini was the star of the men’s meet, setting a pair of all classification state meet records in the event. Battaglini set the all classification 50 Freestyle record in the prelims at 19.76 seconds, and one-upped himself in the finals, posting a stunning 19.47 second time, the sixth fastest time swam all-time in the NFHS National Record Books.
Battaglini was not done with the records with his 50 Freestyle performance. He dazzled again in the 100 Butterfly, clocking in at 46.94 for another all classification State Meet record. Battaglini’s 100 Butterfly ranks him 15th all-time in the event in the NFHS National Record Books and cemented his selection as the 2023 3A Most Outstanding Swimmer Award recipient.
Notable finishes in the 3A Men’s Championships also included a second place in the 100 Yard Freestyle for junior William Gray of Durham School of the Arts and a second place in the 100 Yd Breaststroke for Aaron Reyes of Atkins.
Wrestling
At the 4A NCHSAA State Wrestling Championships, James Bankston of Hillside advanced to the championship round in the 220 lb division.
Women's Basketball
Hillside advanced into the Semi-Finals of the 4A Women’s State Tournament beating New Hanover 61-13, Wakefield 71-58, Swett 54-51, and Rolesville 41-39. Hillside met Panther Creek in the semis, losing 61-55.
Men's Basketball
At the 4A Men’s Basketball State Championships, Jordan advanced far into the tournament, emerging victorious over Ashley, Laney, and Millbrook before meeting eventual runner-up, Richmond in the 4th round.Â
